UZBEKISTAN may seem like a strange out-of-the-way place to spend a holiday, a landlocked ex-Soviet republic in the heart of Central Asia, but it was once at the heart of the Silk Road - the ancient trading route between east and west.

Its cities were centres of commerce, culture and learning and saw the comings and goings of great conquerors like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and it was even the home to one of the mightiest of these warlords - Tamerlane.
