Matthew Pinsent, rowing superstar and would-be broadcaster, has complained about the 'abusive' treatment of children and young people in the world-renowned Shi Cha Hai Sports School in Beijing.

On a visit to China, he was shocked to witness boys and girls undertaking the most gruelling of gymnastics coaching sessions. The vice-principal of the school apparently told Pinsent about the old Chinese proverb 'without beating, without success'.
