Cardiff was last night planning to once again ride to the rescue of strife-torn Wembley and stage the FA Cup final in May.

A highly-placed government official was last night quoted as saying the stadium had no chance of being ready in time. And Roger Lewis, the Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive, responded by saying the home of Welsh sport was ready and willing to host another final.
